Mark O'Connor - Fiddle
Sally Goodwin (Mark's Arrangement of the P.D. fiddle tune)

Mark O'Connor made fiddle history at age 13 by becoming the youngest Grand Master Fiddler Champion ever. The record still stands today (as of 2017). Young Mark was pitted against one of the greatest fields of contest fiddlers ever assembled that included competing against his own teacher and American fiddle legend Benny Thomasson, as well other world champion fiddling legends including Major Franklin, Louis Franklin, Norman Solomon, Vernon Solomon, Terry Morris, Texas Shorty, Larry Franklin (now of the Time Jumpers), Sam Bush, J.T. Perkins and a Canadian National Champion in the field for the 1975 competition in Nashville.

The winner was awarded $1,000, a plague, a blue Grand Master Jacket, and appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and the national television shows, "Hee Haw" and the "Porter Wagoner Show." For his performance on the Wagoner Show, see:    • Best 13-year old fiddler, Mark O'Conn...

Read this blog about what fiddlers of the day thought about Mark's playing, a young boy who was one of the very few youngsters emerging on the scene in the early 1970s who played the fiddle: https://markoconnorblog.blogspot.com/...

The clip features "Hee Haw" regulars including Grandpa Jones, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Roni Stoneman (sitting directly in front of Mark, and legendary Banjo Player Bobby Thompson as well as other Nashville A-list player backing up the young fiddle champion on his version of "Sally Goodwin!"
