On Thursday, tens of thousands of Bangladeshi citizens, including university students, took to the streets demanding changes in government job distribution. The protests quickly turned violent, resulting in 17 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Major areas of Dhaka were deserted, and the metro rail service was shut down. The students have been protesting for weeks against a quota system for government jobs that benefits certain groups, including families of independence fighters.
