Описание к видео 🎵 Sappho of Lesbos - Ancient Greece, circa 610 to 570 BC (History Preview)

Sappho of Lesbos was an ancient Greek poet who lived around 610 to 570 BC. She was born in Mytilene on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea. Her lyric poetry, originally composed to be sung with a lyre, explored themes of love, devotion, and personal emotion.

Her works once filled nine papyrus rolls in the Library of Alexandria. Most were later lost or destroyed, leaving only fragments preserved by later quotations and papyrus finds. Among these are hymns to Aphrodite and verses composed for festivals and weddings.

Sappho was celebrated in antiquity as the “Tenth Muse,” ranking alongside Homer in literary importance. Her poetry influenced generations of Greek and Roman writers and became a central part of classical education.

Over time, her name and homeland gave rise to the term “sapphic,” reflecting her association with female expression and affection. Despite centuries of misinterpretation and censorship, Sappho’s surviving lines continue to be studied for their clarity, rhythm, and emotional depth.

Her legacy stands as one of the earliest examples of a woman’s independent voice in recorded literature.
