A village of character

Cotignac, a village of character with 2146 inhabitants, nestles at the foot of a huge tuff rock 400 meters long and 80 meters high. In the Quaternary, the La Cassole river flowed over the rock. The current village was then only the base of this immense waterfall.
From the 1000s until the 19th century this river was diverted and now passes east of the village and flows into the Argens. It is therefore the falls of this water that have formed all the crevices and the petrified waterfalls.

A symbol

These caves have had various uses that have evolved over the centuries. Today, the Rock is the symbol of Cotignac and its history. We say here “Aquéu will no longer see Roco, é will be maléreux”: That one will no longer see La Roche, and he will be unhappy.

Cotignac is a French commune located in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its inhabitants are called the Cotignacéens. The old village has several monuments listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments1 and the number of its inhabitants has increased sharply since 19682. It also has a very active craft industry. It is a place of Catholic pilgrimage for fathers and mothers and expectant couples3,4. The city has two religious shrines.
