• Blinken lands in Israel after Egypt talks seeking Gaza cease-fire. Secretary of State Blinken landed in Israel on Friday after travel to Egypt for talks focused on efforts to secure a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war, gain release of hostages held in Gaza and move more humanitarian aid into Gaza to help Palestinian civilians who are badly in need of assistance.
• Russia targets Kyiv in aerial attack. Russian aerial attacks targeted Ukraine’s capital, with the Ukrainian air force saying it shot down all 31 Russian missiles involved. Zelenskyy called on the support of Ukraine’s partners in providing air defense systems. The attack on Kyiv came a day after Zelenskyy hosted White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
• Ukrainians see Putin’s reelection as another sign war won’t end soon. Like many people around the world, Ukrainians were not surprised by what was reported as President Vladimir Putin’s landslide victory in the Russian elections. Many see the outcome as another sign the war in Ukraine will not end anytime soon.
• Anti-China protesters clash with police outside Chinese embassy during FM Wang's visit to Canberra. Protesters clashed with Australian police outside the Chinese Embassy in Canberra during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit for talks with Australian leaders on Wednesday. Penny Wong raised Australia's concerns about human rights including in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong.
• Chinese-built airport in Nepal raises worries of debt trap. A China-funded international airport in Nepal opened more than a year ago but still hasn’t received international flights. With loan repayments for the Pokhara airport due to start soon, many worry Nepal has fallen into a debt trap.
• World Water Day: Corporations accused of ‘Grabbing’ water from Global South. There is a growing risk of conflict over water resources as climate change takes hold, according to the UN, which is marking World Water Day on Friday. Meanwhile, the aid agency Oxfam accuses global corporations of grabbing water from poorer countries to boost profits, as Henry Ridgwell reports from London.
• Young leaders take part in Dalai Lama’s Fellows program. The Dalai Lama met with fourteen young leaders in the Dalai Lama Fellows program and an accompanying group of guests. The Fellows is a unique one-year leadership program for emerging social-change-makers designed to integrate contemplative work and intentional personal transformation with efforts to bring about positive change in their respective communities.
