Itay Lotem is the holder of the Transregional studies – EHESS / Iméra Chair for the 2025-26 academic year.

His research project at Iméra, the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix Marseille Université, ‘Talking about Race’ interrogates the reasons for the ‘discursive shift’ in antiracist activism in the 2000s in France and Germany, and with it the transformation of European antiracism and the circulation of ideas on ‘race’ beyond the anglophone space.
He examines how antiracist activists have negotiated their position in society as racialised subjects through vocabulary that was available to them and reacting to social backlash as they went. Bringing together oral-history interviews and digital humanities’ methods, his project provides insights into the circulation of ideas about ‘race’ between academia, activist objectives, and shifting public discourse.

Itay Lotem est titulaire de la Chaire EHESS / Iméra – Etudes transrégionales pour l’année 2025-26.
Son projet de recherche à l'Iméra, l'Institut d'Études Avancées d'Aix-Marseille Université, intitulé « Talking about Race », interroge les raisons du « tournant discursif » de l'activisme antiraciste dans les années 2000 en France et en Allemagne, et avec lui la transformation de l'antiracisme européen et la circulation des idées sur la « race » au-delà de l'espace anglophone.
Il examine comment les militants antiracistes ont négocié leur position dans la société en tant que sujets racialisés à travers le vocabulaire qui leur était disponible et en réagissant au fur et à mesure aux réactions négatives de la société. Combinant des entretiens d'histoire orale et des méthodes issues des humanités numériques, son projet fournit un aperçu de la circulation des idées sur la « race » entre le monde universitaire, les objectifs militants et l'évolution du discours public.
