2020 was a year of many challenges to all of us, but for the Internet Freedom community we faced a special challenge regarding fundraising.


Not only did we have to face the effects of COVID-19, but we also saw a sharp decrease in individual donations in the spring. We watched as all of our planned in-person events, during which we previously raised a significant percentage of our funds, were canceled. Foundations also quickly changed their funding plans to respond to the new challenges of the pandemic.


And on top of all that one of our main funders—Open Technology Fund—suffered a big attack by the Trump administration that blocked all of their funds.Many of us had to learn how to adapt to this situation and create alternative ways to raise funds.


This session is to share our stories, the strategies we developed, and stories of our success and challenges. Our goal is to share this process with the community so other organizations can benefit and adopt new strategies to help diversify their funds. It’s crucial that we ensure longevity and stability for the whole community, and we hope that this session can help strengthen our community skills on fundraising.
