(1 Jun 1970) RR7022 NORTHERN IRELAND: BELFAST'S SOCIAL PROBLEMS

How much of Northern Ireland's troubles today are caused by religious bigotry and hatred? And how
much by the squalor and deprivation in which so many of Ulster's citizens live - Catholic and Protestant
alike? Belfast has half a million inhabitants, many of whom live in slums with no inside lavatory, no bath, no hot water or electricity. Some houses are rotten with damp, others were unfit for human habitation even
before the First World War. Wages are much lower than in the rest of the UK and unemployment is nearly
three times higher. Belfast's Labour Exchange is the largest in Britain. This report looks at the social
problems of Belfast as they affected four families.
