According to some reports, around 15,000 animals were sacrificed at this year’s fair.

I am Vishal Kumar Singh, and I documented this festival in 2024 as part of my social documentary photography work. However, if you ask me about my personal stance on this project, my answer is clear: I am against animal sacrifice. There is no mention of animal sacrifice in our Sanatan Dharma, and this conflict between tradition and compassion is what motivated me to document this event.

About the Gadhimai Temple and Festival
The Gadhimai Temple is located in Bariyarpur, Bara district, Nepal. It is one of the major religious sites in Nepal, where the Gadhimai fair takes place every five years, drawing millions of attendees. Unfortunately, a large number of animals are sacrificed during this event.

Key facts about the Gadhimai Festival:

The temple is believed to have been established around 265 years ago.

According to legend, the temple's founder had a dream in which the Goddess Gadhimai asked for a blood sacrifice to protect him from evil forces.

People from various states in India also travel to attend this fair.

Controversies surrounding the festival:

Animal rights activists have repeatedly called for a ban on the sacrifices during the event.

In 2015, following extensive campaigning by activists, animal sacrifice was officially banned at the festival.

In 2016, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the government to take measures to stop the animal sacrifices at the fair.

This project reflects my effort to document a cultural reality while questioning certain traditions that conflict with animal welfare.
