And a 142 pound anvil I found at a local antique mall.

First, let’s look at them by the numbers:

The Vevor weighs in at a respectable 132 pounds, costs just $292, ships for Free in the US, and can be ordered today.

The Antique anvil weighs in at a higher 142 pounds, costs $725, and the only one available is in southern Indiana.

Both anvils fit my standard pricing criteria of being $7-$8 per pound or less.

Anything above that price, taking into account the condition of the anvil, deserves more scrutiny.

What works in the Vevor 132 lb anvil’s favor is its clean sharp edges, flat face, lack of pitting or damage, product reviews, and its much lower cost per pound of $2.21.

That’s an outstanding price.

In comparison, the 142 pound antique anvil has no visible brand, tons of pitting, face damage and a cost per pound of $5.11.

I would need to do more research to properly value it, but based on its condition I wouldn’t pay $725.

WHY are old, damaged anvils expensive?

Blacksmithing has gained a lot of popularity over the past 15 years and people think they can get a quick win if the anvil is heavy and old.

Definitely not true for this one.

I’m familiar with this anvil because it was offered to me by the booth owner 4 years ago.

I wasn’t available to take a look at it then, but seeing it now, I wouldn’t pay $725.

OLD doesn’t mean better

We need to look at the anvil as a whole:
Price per pound, quality of the tool, and its usefulness

So, based on what we know about the two anvils, the Vevor 132 pound anvil is the winner.
