Quite a wonderful ring with not a common depiction of Hercules (Heracles) wearing the Nemean lion’s skin over his shoulders and head in place of traditional armour.

Killing the Nemean lion was the first of the hero’s famous twelve labors and it gave him his famous hide for protection. After killing the beast with his bare hands, he was almost always shown wearing its skin with its head pulled up over his own like a hood.

This unusual example of a cameo ring is finely carved in relief from shell and crafted in bright 9ct yellow gold, the cameo bezel set to a surround with fine millgrain detail to a rope twist border and open back verso.

Trident styled shoulders (quite fitting given the Greek mythology theme!)from seamlessly to a solid flat shank.

Perfect for those who have a connection to Greek mythology or just all of us who love a rare and interesting piece of antique history!

Very good to excellent antique condition. Cameo is lovely, finely carved and crisp with no stress fractures of issues. Ring is solid with no thinning to shank or wear to gallery or rope work. Lovely unusual cameo ring.
