Hi my name is Katie Blackwell, and in this segment we will be going over the difference between student grade paint and professional grade paint. Now lets go see what that difference is!

On the left side of my palette I have student grade. And I'm going to show you three different ways. The first one is just a test- seeing what they look like right next to each other. This is student grade Cadmium Red. Ill clean off my brush, so you can see the difference.

Now we have professional grade, exact same color. You cant tell a huge difference Just by doing that. Once you let it dry, you'll see that the professional dries more consistently all the way through and the student grade is going to have a little bit more pigment one side, a little less on the other side. So thats one big difference.

But where you're going to see it most when you're painting, is the opacity of the pigment. so here we have the student grade Cadmium Red. It's pretty transparent on top of this black. We take the same amount of paint in the professional grade, there's quite a big difference. Thats very opaque. Now what that means is that when you use a different color in mixing, lets get two splotches on here, its going to take a lot more of the student grade paint to mix to a certain color.

So lets put a bit of the Cad red student grade - we mix some, and thats a good black color if you want to mix it. It's a little transparent. But if you take the professional, you automatically have more of a Burnt Sienna type color. To get the Cadmium Red student grade to that same shade as the professional, its going to take about three times as much paint. Which essentially means you're going to have to use a whole lot more of your student grade tube that you would with your professional grade tube.

So if you're using it sparingly, and you're not painting it with a very thick style, its going to save you a lot of money in the long run to just use the professional grade instead of the student. You're going to get much more vibrant results. Its going to mix better, and its just easier to use. But if you're a student and you don't want to spend that much money, the student grade is still fine, just not quite as as much fun.
