Tiffin Sambar Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins | Cooking Time : 20 mins | Serves :3 to 4

Split Yellow Moong Dal – 1/2 cup
Small Onion – 1/2 cup chopped
Tomato – 1 chopped
Potato – 1 medium sized chopped roughly
Carrot – 1
Brinjal - 1
Green Chilli – 2
Tamarind pulp – 1 tbsp
Jaggery – 1/2 tbsp (optional)
Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp for garnishing
Salt – to taste

To Roast And Grind:
Channa Dal – 1 tbsp
Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
Red chllies – 1

To Temper:
Oil - 3 tsp
Ghee - 3 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal – 1/2 tsp
Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Hing – a generous pinch

Method:
1.Dry roast the ingredients under ‘to roast and grind’ and grind it to a semi fine powder. Set aside.
2.In a pan add tsp of ghee and roast moong dal till nice aroma comes and is slightly browned.
3.Pressure cook moong dal with 2 cups of water for 4-5 whistles until its mushy. Smash it again with a laddle, set aside.
4.In a kadai – add 3 tsp of oil and 3 tsp of ghee, once hot add mustard seeds and urad dal, let it splutter. Next add in jeera, curry leaves & green chillies.
5.Next add the chopped onions, tomato and turmeric powder. Saute till tomato shrinks and raw smell leaves.
6.Add in the chopped veggies and saute for 2 mins on medium flame.
7.Then transfer this to the cooked dal. Then add the 2.5 tbsp of roast and ground powder, 1 tbsp of tamarind pulp, then add jaggery. Check salt once.
8.Add 1 cup of water at this stage and pressure cook for 1 whistle or just cook the veggies while boiling itself.
9.Once done add garnish with chopped corainder and transfer it to serving bowl.
10.This is perfect with idlis and dosas. Serve hot with idlis drizzled with ghee….heaven!! 🙂
