Northern Leopard Frogs
In early August 2023, I was lucky to visit an area in southeastern Alberta where Northern Leopard Frogs can be found. It was a hot day (33 C) and over the course of a 3-km walk, we counted 33 frogs!
Most of the frogs were hiding in the shade of large shoreline rocks and would leap into the water before we even saw them. But a few seemed to be unconcerned about our presence, so sat quietly while we admired and photographed them.

I have been looking for Northern Leopard Frogs for many years, so it was a thrill to finally be able to see and photograph them!

Quick Facts
• One of the largest frog species found in Alberta, the Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens) varies in size between 5 and 12 cm.
• It can be easily distinguished by its green or brown colouration and the numerous dark spots.
• Until the late 1970s, the species was widely distributed across most of the province. Apparently due to habitat fragmentation, they are now found mainly in isolated populations in the southern grasslands and wetlands.
• The Alberta Environmental Protection agency has listed the species as threatened (at potential risk of becoming endangered).
• The species is under the supervision of the MULTISAR (Multiple Species at Risk program), which focuses on: surveying local populations; assessing the ecological status of the habitat; developing management recommendations and habitat enhancement projects; and monitoring the species’ response over time.
