Introduction to fluorescent lamps: How it works, inventors, animations. The fluorescent light is the most prolific type of lamp in the world. For indoor lighting it remains the lowest cost efficient light source. Inventors include George Inman, Richard Thayer, Edmund Germer, Albert Hull, Ed Hammer, John Anderson. GE, Westinghouse, Sylvania, OSRAM, Philips all contributed to the fluorescent lamp. It uses two electrodes which send current through argon and mercury vapor to make UV light. The UV light strikes phosphors which convert the energy into visible light.
