Kimberly Illingworth is a professor of pharmacy practice and the Assistant Dean of Learning and Assessment in the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University. In this video, she explains how the pharmacy staffing shortage is impacting patients and pharmacists and what is being done to address the issue. Illingworth says that this shortage has resulted in delays for patients receiving their prescriptions. In many cases, these delays can have a negative impact on patient health as people miss doses. Illingworth explains that this staffing shortage also adds additional stress to existing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy employees are being asked to do more with less resources during a time when COVID, RSV, and other illnesses are having a large impact. Illingworth says that this has caused some pharmacies to close early and raised questions regarding patient safety. Illingworth goes on to explain that after the coronavirus pandemic, many pharmacists are pursuing different career paths. Organizations at the national, state, and local level are currently looking into employee wellbeing, pharmacy benefit managers and creating safer work environments to help address this issue.
