Whales and sea lion sightings were just a part of my wife's birthday trip to one of America's most iconic lighthouses (and the costliest ever built in lives lost and money spent). Located in the Pacific Ocean 6 miles off the coast of Crescent City, Ca., the lighthouse was built decades after the Brother Jonathan steamer sank on the nearby rocks. Almost 150 people drowned and a shipment of gold was lost. For more information check out the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society website and Facebook page. A special thanks to Bill Odonnell, all the Preservation Society members and our excellent pilot, Dave, from Air Shasta in Redding, Ca.
