ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A rare pregnancy complication that affected reality star Kim Kardashian also left its mark on one local woman. "It's relatively rare," OB/GYN Dr. Zachary Bowman said. "Estimates are probably around one in 2,500." Emma Smith knows firsthand what it's like to be the one with placenta accreta -- a pregnancy condition when blood vessels and other parts of the placenta grow too deeply into the uterine wall. Emma consulted with her physician and learned she could bleed to death during the month-early planned delivery of Kia at Mission Hospital. "At the time of surgery, you do a C-section to remove the baby; we leave the placenta alone and don't want to remove that because we risk further bleeding that can be catastrophic," Dr. Bowman said. "[We] close the uterus quickly and then do a hysterectomy to remove the uterus." Recovery has been pretty slow the past six months, but mom and baby are doing OK. They're heading home as a miracle family.
