The sacred anointing oil (שֶׁמֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה, šemen hammišḥâ) stands as one of Scripture's most vivid types of the Holy Spirit—a physical substance symbolizing the invisible divine presence that consecrates, empowers, and sets apart for holy service. God commanded Moses to create this oil from specific spices: myrrh, cinnamon, cane, cassia, and olive oil (Exodus 30:22-25), and to anoint the tabernacle, its furnishings, and Aaron and his sons as priests (30:26-30). The formula was sacred—to replicate it for common use meant being "cut off from his people" (30:33). The oil served three primary functions: consecration (setting apart for holy use), empowerment (enabling for divine service), and identification (marking as belonging to God). When applied, the oil physically ran down from the head, symbolizing the Spirit's overflow (Psalm 133:2). The trajectory reveals escalating patterns: priests anointed → kings anointed → prophets anointed → the Messiah (מָשִׁיחַ, māšîaḥ, "Anointed One") receives the Spirit without measure → believers anointed by the Spirit → eternal presence of God filling all. The type teaches that the Spirit, like oil, penetrates, permeates, heals, illuminates (lamp oil), and consecrates. What was restricted to select individuals in the OT (priests, kings, prophets) becomes the privilege of all believers in the new covenant—"the anointing that you received from him abides in you" (1 John 2:27).
