16 December is the darkest day in the history of Pakistan. East Pakistan, having the majority of the population was separated. Pakistani media including the mainstream newspapers and news channels have yet to learn this! Pakistani media are silent today! Only one poet, who is sensitive and sensible, Anwar Shaoor remembered it!
The tyranny inflicted upon East Pakistan is unprecedented in the history of the world. The figures are incapable of being verified but up to 3 million civilians were killed and 300,000 women brutally raped! There is no example in the history of mankind of human sufferings at the hands of their own countrymen!
Creation of Pakistan would not have been possible without the active support of East Pakistanis. In 1946 election, Jinnah's party won 113/119 seats in East Bengal whereas it lost election in NWFP, Punjab and Sindh, which means that these regions constituting West Pakistan, had not supported creation of Pakistan!
Pakistan's 70% revenue was generated by export of jute, produced in East Pakistan but only 30% was allocated for East Pakistan. There was only one Bengali officer, a deputy secretary, in the central secretariat. One of the ten greatest cyclones of the world 'Bhola' hit East Pakistan in 1970 but the first aid supply reached there after two weeks. The exploitation of East Pakistan was at its peak. Awami League of Shaikh Mujeeb-u-Rahman won the 1971 election with clear majority but the session of National Assembly was postponed twice to avoid transfer of power. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, hand in glove with General Yahya Khan, equally opposed holding of NA session. They wanted Awami League to agree to their terms and conditions even before transfer of power. Finally, they decided to carry out a military operation against East Pakistan. The operation began on 25 March 1971 while General Yahya Khan had returned to Islamabad but Mr. Bhutto was still there. Dacca University was attacked alongwith military action at other places. 7000 people were killed in East Pakistan only that day! Mr. Bhutto returned to Karachi the next morning. At airport, he stated 'Thank God! Pakistan has been saved!'. His political acumen had been marred by lust for power. The brutal operation continued till 16 December 1971.
The brutality during operation searchlight is indescribable!
Hasan Zaheer, author of 'Separation of East Pakistan' establishes that it was Pakistan that decided to go for an all out war against India (to justify foreseeable loss of East Pakistan). One of the officials had remarked that they will not even be able to wear uniforms on loss of East Pakistan and so a solution was found. It was decided to start the war on 1st December but this date was extended to 3rd December for some reason.
Unfortunately, the history of Pakistan has not only been distorted but also concealed a lot. Even the students of O Level don't know that East Pakistan ever existed!
George Santayana says that those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it! It can be safely said that we have not learnt from our own history! Are we going to repeat it?
