Over November and December 2020, DXC's 5293 and 5212 were operating in the North Island after undergoing fixes and overhauls at the Hutt Workshops.

DXC 5293 was the first DX to be tested and ran on a carriage test train to Paekakariki and back, in the evening 5293 hauled freight Train 220 to Auckland, and returned dead on Train 221 the following day.

DXC 5212 was the first DXC to be fitted with a new electronic system called "EFI". It ran on a test train to Palmerston North and return before going back to the Hutt Workshops for minor fixes. The following week 5212 began to run on freight and passenger trains around the lower North Island throughout the month of December.

It is rare to get 2 DX's testing in the lower North Island within the span of a couple of months, and provided a rare sight to those in the North Island, as all the DX were moved to the South Island as of December 2019.
