Archilochus of Paroc (c.680-645 B.C.) was an ancient Greek lyrical poet from the island of Paros. He is the earliest known Greek writer to compose his works almost entirely on the theme of his own emotions and experiences. The son of a nobleman and a slave woman, Archilochus of Paros was also a mercenary soldier and took part in the colonization of the island of Thasos.

In "On Friends Lost at Sea", Archilochus of Paros mourns the death of some of his fellow comrades during a battle at sea. During the eulogy, the poet tells the other soldiers to take control of their grief and move on with life with the hopes of future victory.
