Historically, fly tying has been a pastime dominated by old men in tweed smoking their pipes at a desk in a dark corner of their basement — a gooseneck desk light illuminating hackle feathers, maribou, and peacock hurl. Fly patterns like the Adams, Green Drake, Prince Nymph, Royal Coachman, and Wooly Bugger were tied in preparation for trips to chase trout.
Just as fly fishing has evolved from the stuffy trout-only activity that was only enjoyed by the rich to an everyman’s sport that targets pretty much any species that swims, fly tying has evolved too — and Flymen Fishing Company has come out with a fly tying kit that makes it easy for anyone to tie like a pro.
Winner of Best Fly Tying Material at the 2022 International Fly Tackle Dealer show in Salt Lake City, Flymen Fishing Company now has ten fly tying kits, including Chocklett's Finesse Changer, Fish-Skull Skulpin Bunny, and Nymph-Head Evolution Mayfly Clinger Nymph — and Free Range American’s Matt Smythe was there to get see what they’re all about.
“These kits are for very specific and very popular flies that anglers love to fish with,” said Smythe. “This gives you an opportunity to learn how to tie these popular patterns.”
Perfect for a wide range of species — from trout, bass, panfish, and pike to saltwater species as well — each fly tying kit contains everything you need to tie a small batch of these signature patterns, Smythe pointed out, including all necessary materials.
“This particular one is the Fish-Skull Sculpin Bunny,” he said. “We’ve got the Fish-Skull heads themselves. We’ve got hooks, which are important because we’re not catching fish without hooks. You’ve got maribou that you’re gonna use for the body as well as the tail material. And then there’s also the stick-on eyes so that you’re gonna be able to add the eyes to the side of the sculpin head.”
Having the right materials is one thing, but you still need to know what to do with them. That’s why each fly tying kit also comes with step-by-step instructions.
“In this case, it’s 12 steps,” Smythe said. “I mean everything from which way to twist the line and where to wrap, and then shows you an image of the fly when it’s all done.”
Whether you’re a seasoned tier or you’re spinning up your very first fly these all-in-one kits make it easy to add a new pattern to your fly selection.
“It’s a great little kit,” Smythe said. “These are a great way to get in and learn these popular basic patterns.”
The only thing you’ll need that these kits don’t have is a fly tying vise, which you can pick up on the cheap through Flymen, as well.
So belly up to an empty table, grab a good light source, and get a hands-on lesson on how to spin up some of the best, most productive fly patterns out there. Pipe and tweed not required.
