6 Nightmarish Creatures of The Mist (2007) – Explained

A group of people in a local grocery store is trapped when an inexplicable mist comes to town, bringing unseen monsters and unimaginable horrors along with it. With no way out of the grocery store, residents of the small town in New England must come face to face with Lovecraftian monsters, but they must also recognize that each one of them can reach depths of human depravity - they had never thought possible. All to protect themselves. It is indicated that a government project related to Alternate Dimensions went awry, which liberated the mist.

The Mist is a 2007 movie by Frank Darabont, adapted from a novel by Stephen King of the same name. Darabont is no stranger to King, and this is not his first time adapting one of his novels into movies. This is his third adaptation after directing Shawshank Redemption in 1994 and The Green Mile in 1998, for both of which he received critical acclaim.

But in adapting The Mist, Darabont took the liberty of playing around with the plotline a little, making it even darker and morbid than its source. He even changed the ending a bit for which he had to pull out some big bucks from his own pockets and these changes accentuated King’s story to a whole new level. These small tweaks by Darabont made the story more engrossing by filling in plot holes and adding more dimensions to the characters. It is one of the ballsiest movie adaptations and continues to be relevant even years after it was released in post- terrorism afflicted America.

The real kicker in this movie is the movie’s underlying message about how the facade of humanity begins to slowly lose its shine, revealing the true faces and the base human instincts - when faced with extreme life-threatening situations. The sociopolitical commentary is only one aspect of The Mist, as it is also a glorious creature horror movie in its own right. 

The monsters that the Mist brings in are varied, deadly, and of course, otherworldly. The creatures in the film are not just horrifying animals, they are well-designed and their attacks have clear logic behind them. These are absurd looking creatures but the way they are presented in the film feels like they can exist in our world as well because their behaviors were animalistic yet felt natural.
