Abstract
In Thomas Jefferson & Sally Hemings, a mysterious love story, I highlight the beginning, middle, and ending of America’s most mysterious relationship. In the video, I highlight Jefferson’s younger life and how he ended up with enslaved people due to his father’s will. Also, the relationship he had with four forbidden women, Betsy Walker, Maria Cosway, Martha Wayles Skelton, and Sally Hemings. Born into slavery due to her mother being owned by John Wayles, Sally Hemings would be born into slavery. At fourteen years old, she would travel to France with Thomas Jefferson and served time as his daughter’s lady’s maid. Many historians believe that Jefferson’s relationship with Hemings started while they were in Paris. Sally Hemings was just beginning to learn the French language, and she was considered free. However, she returned to Monticello with Jefferson. However, at first, she refused, but Sally was pregnant. Sally had six children, with four making it to adulthood and some passing into white society. October 31, 1998, marks a watershed in Jefferson studies. On that day, Nature lifted its press embargo on a DNA study suggesting that Thomas Jefferson or a male-line relative was the father of Sally Hemings's youngest son, Eston.
