My first time replacing one of these.

For Dual 1219, 1229, and 1249 Turntables
with "single" or "multi" mode lever
for tonearm height adjustment
(vertical tracking angle)

It is very important to replace this rubber ring / sleeve / washer as the old ones are usually brittle like the one I removed here.

The rubber ring holds and squeezes two ball bearings that press into an indent on the metal rod that adjusts the tone arm height via a lever ("Single" or "Multi") at the base of the tonearm.

Don't use the lever unless you know the turntable
has had the rubber retaining washer / sleeve / ring
replaced.

Whatever you do, don't ever force the lever if you feel any significant resistance
because there is an important plastic part of the tonearm
called a "deering ring" that is under constant spring pressure
and can easily be broken if you try to force the lever.

If the dearing ring breaks,
plastic pieces of the broken part
can get caught up in the tonearm mechanism
and render your turntable unusable.

Replacement rings / sleeves / washers are available on ebay and other stores.

I bought a clear ring from one vendor and a black rubber ring (like the original) from another but I decided to use the clear one for now.
The clear ring is slicker feeling while the black one feels more like regular rubber.

After reading another post on vinylengine.com, It looks like I probably should have completely removed the two ball bearings and cleaned them.
