It would not be an understatement to romantically title Indonesia as the ten thousand gems of the orient. , Indonesia is the largest island country in the world because It has islands in the number of ten of thousands, and the exact number is still a matter of debate till this day.

According to the latest study conducted by the Indonesian Geo-spatial Information Agency in 2010 and verified by the UN and CIA in 2012, Indonesia is made up of 13,466 islands, out which 922 are permanently inhabited. A survey in 2002 that put the number at 18,307 islands. But the consensus is generally based on the 1996 estimate of 17,508 islands; and that is usually the first number you will find when you are googling them up. And as we told you, they are still debating about it till today.

We settle with the fact that we still don’t know the exact number of islands in Indonesia. But one thing is certain as of today that there are currently 34 provinces in Indonesia.
