I hope this show will transcend the simple and necessary process of talking directly about recovery and addiction. Obviously these subjects tend to work their way into and even shape most of my thoughts. And so it follows that culture, art, philosophy, and my environment, shapes my recovery.
This is why I wanted to talk to John about his book and the necessity for the freedom of migration.
The Case for Open Borders makes a convincing case that criminalizing migration, does nothing to stop migration (actually increases it), and in fact actively destroys and divides the culture and community that the practice is meant to protect.
Whereas migration in and of itself, is a benefit to all.
Which made me think about drugs and addiction. And how criminalizing addiction only exasperates and increases the problem. Again the practice simply destroys the communities it purports to be curing.
Addiction is complicated and metaphysical and killing us by the thousands. Throwing people in prison, or just saying no, has done nothing to help the situation, and as climate change continues, the need for migration will increase to unprecedented numbers.
We can keep trying to shut these humans out with cages and walls and guns and watch as suffering spreads and our world becomes more militaristic and more addicted, or we can change our approach and begin to recover together.
