In this video, I test out microwave drying of wood. This process is dangerous, and is not intended to be a tutorial, but just an explanation of the process I used to experiment with microwave drying.

I rough turned a piece of walnut that had a moisture content of about 25%, and weighed 248 grams. After cycling the piece between 20 seconds of microwave time and 20 minutes of cooling, I was able to lower the weight to a stable 222 grams. This is a 26 gram loss in water content, which equates to 10.5% weight loss. After no additional weight was lost, I knew the bowl was dry. I did about 12 cycles of 20 seconds/20 minutes over 2 days. This was also done outside as the potential off gassing of some woods may be toxic, and the risk of fire is pretty high. Again this is dangerous, and should not be performed in your house, or in a microwave you use for cooking food.

After the bowl was dry, I moved into finish turning. I then sanded, applied sanding sealer, and friction polish for a finish. I had to fill a crack, and I did that after the drying process with CA glue and sawdust obtained through sanding of the work piece.
