Listen to mysterious ambience recorded in the jungles of Papua at night.

When the sun sets in Papua New Guinea's lowland rainforest, the soundscape changes completely. Gone are the Birds' of Paradise raucous calls and the distant sounds of villages. As the light fades quickly but imperceptibly, the sounds of insects and frogs take over every available niche in the sound spectrum.

I carefully venture out for a night walk. This landscape is treacherous to explore during daytime, and at night I need to be even more careful. There are many known and probably more unknown hazards waiting for me in the dark. Walking around in the bush at night is no easy task. I have to keep hacking at the vegetation because there aren't many footpaths.

It's extremely hot and humid, and soon enough I am exhausted. I can hear the my pulse and my heavy breath, and the sounds of my movements are masking the shrill insect chorus. As I move around and get closer to sound sources, I can notice an audible gap that moves with me. Insects and frogs stop calling for a bit just in case I am a predator, and resume as soon as I have moved outside of their immediate range.

After a bit of aimless wandering I have to stop at the bottom of a ravine. This place will do. The soundscape is deafening, and once my breathing and heart rate slow down I can fully take it in. I cannot distinguish between individual sound sources anymore. Everything is calling at me from everywhere at once. I set up my recording rig and walk back to camp, knackered but in awe of this wild landscape.
