HP Z820 Workstation | We will provide a general overview of the Z820 and a deeper dive into the various memory options such as sizes, speeds and compatible types of RAM. This video will be a general HP Z820 Workstation Memory "How To Guide" for RAM installation and configuration. We will review best practices for loading & upgrading memory modules inside your HP Z820 tower server and provide a general overview of all the different compatible memory options accepted.

The Z820 workstation is essentially a server in a desktop form factor. People sometimes get confused thinking they should be buying desktop memory or CPUs. However, you actually will be operating on server components, which is what makes the Z820 so special. HP’s Z820 runs on dual Intel E5-2600 V1 or V2 series processors, which is an LGA2011 CPU socket. The Z820 server is the next gen to the popular HP PowerEdge Z800 workstation. There are 16 DIMM slots powered by DDR3 memory modules. Speed options: 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Note 1866 will clock down to 1600 speed. Size options: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB and 32GB! No 64GBs are not accepted. You can install two types of memory for your HP Z820: ECC Registered also known as RDIMM or Load Reduced also known as LRDIMM. This is very important. You cannot use regular non-ECC unbuffered desktop modules inside the Z820. You will be upgrading with server DIMMs. There really is not any significant difference between ECC Registered and Load Reduced as far as the HP Z820 is concerned. The max scalability is the exact same. The maximum configuration for the HP Z820 is 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. The same holds true with LRDIMMs, and the max Z820 config is 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory.

This system is a dual CPU socket 1U tower workstation server. Each CPU manages four Memory Channels. Each memory channel controls two DIMM slots. Note: This is very important as the rank rule will not be an issue for the Z820. All 32GB DDR3 DIMMs are Quad Rank and this is the main reason the Rank Rule becomes an issue for other workstations and servers. The Z820 is not effected. HP has labeled & color coded the memory channels. The proper configuration for dual CPUs is in duplicates of four, which will evenly spread the load across each channel. We will discuss this in more depth in our video and also show you how to install the DIMMs inside your HP Z820 workstation server. Some of the CPUs we recommend include: E5-2660, E5-2670, E5-2660v2, E5-2670v2, E5-2690v2 and many more!
