If you've got a high schooler of ANY age, you’ll probably get an invite to something called College Financial Aid Night (or something like it).

You should go. But you should also know what to expect and how to prepare.

These nights are often led by school counselors, outside speakers, or even product-pushing “experts,” and the information comes fast like drinking from a firehose.

So here’s how to make the most of it:

✅ Know that you won’t leave with a plan.
You’ll leave with a lot of information. Most presenters won’t tell you how to apply it to your specific situation, and that’s okay. The goal is to get a broad lay of the land.

✅ Get your Student Aid Index in advance.
This number (formerly called the EFC) gives you a baseline for what your family might be expected to contribute.

✅ Ask yourself two key questions before you go:
What am I able to pay for college?
What am I willing to pay for college?

Those are different, and getting clear on both will help you filter what you learn and start to set real expectations.

Most importantly, don’t panic if you walk away with more questions than answers.

This is just the beginning of this process, and the more knowledge you can acquire right now, the better.
