About the speaker:
Yagnaswami Sundara Ranjan, born on 17 April 1944 in Kottaram near Tirunelveli, completed his school and education in Bombay. He received his master's degree in Bombay University and then joined the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmadabad as a Research Scholar to work with Dr Vikram Sarabhai's (PRL-Founder, Padma Bhushan, 1966) team. His work with
Prof. Satish Dhawan (ISRO Chairman, 1972–1984), was strategic to the overall management and in giving direction to the nascent space programme of the seventies and eighties. His work at ISRO was recognized internationally and among the first few Indians, he was elected as Member of International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) (1986).

Dr. Rajan, at the peak of his career in ISRO, made a shift in career and offered technological solutions to complex problems facing India. He was the first Executive Director (ED) of newly created Technology Information and Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) (1988-2002). Dr Rajan's work at TIFAC created technology consciousness in Indian Industry and brought in a technological aspect for the successful endeavours in business.

He was Vice-Chancellor in Punjab Technical University (PTU) and Scientific Adviser, to Punjab Chief Minister which led to many fruitful institutional innovations.

He has authored many books viz. Discover Your Power Quotient and several articles and papers published in International journals, the well-known book India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium co-authored with A P J Abdul Kalam.

He has been honoured with many awards including, Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (1998); Fellow of World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) (2010) and Padma Shri(2012).

This lecture was delivered on 24th February 2020 at CLT, IIT Madras.
