I am always a big proponent of leaving for a destination with ample time in my pocket. This enables me to cater to unforeseen delays and helps me enjoy the journey more. When you have sufficient time, you can stop by wherever you feel like it. Not only this, but you also negate the pressure that can mount because of being pressed for time.
Following the same mantra, we left around 8 am from Chilas City. It is the divisional capital of Diamer District located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, on the Indus River. Our plan was to delay the breakfast until the Raikot bridge. That plan, however, turned out to be very short-lived. We soon ended up having breakfast from a roadside local restaurant. The parathas were delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast.
We refueled our car from a service station in Jaglot. We devoured ice creams and finally had a cup of coffee from the shop there. We stopped by a spot in Jaglot from where you can view three mighty mountain ranges. This viewpoint is called a "three mountain junction" or "The junction of three mightiest mountain ranges". The Himalayas (which means the “Home of Snow”), The Karakoram, and The Hindu Kush (which means the “Killer of Hindus”) meet in this region and can be clearly seen from this viewpoint.
The confluence of the Indus river and the Gilgit river occurs at the same place. We took some pictures and drone shots and left for Skardu.
Skardu road forks from the Karakoram highway to the right. The road is truly a marvel and by no means lesser in quality than the Karakoram highway. Officially this road is called Strategic Highway 1 or S1. The road however is also labeled as Gilgit Skardu Road, Jaglot Skardu road, or simply Skardu road. This road is strategically an important road for the country's defense because it is the supply route of the border regions including Kargil, Siachen, Batalik, and Chorbat.
Not a single day passed in Gilgit Baltistan when we did not see a surprise. This road is unarguably one of them. It is quite dangerous and winding. The journey is picturesque and adventurous with Indus river flowing right next to the road. The mountains are humongous.
We had a lot of fun in the car. We cracked jokes, laughed, and made plans for the rest of the trip. We reached Skardu before sunset and checked into our hotel room.
