I've been an avid traveler and crew member aboard a few boats owned by friends. For the last couple of years, I have been in and out of the Bahamas on different adventures and never thought I would actually own a boat. In fact, I was quite content to let my friends own the boats and I simply enjoy myself as a helpful passenger. Thanks to those friends, I have sailed through the Bahamas, explored wrecks, hunted pigs on a deserted island, dove blue holes, and tuned my spearfishing abilities in some of the most amazing reefs. We even spent a month living "on the hard" in a Florida boatyard, making repairs, battling boat yard showers, chasing off hoards of feral cats, and the occasional boat yard scuffle. It has been an adventure just being friends with boat owners.

I had looked at purchasing a few boats in the past, which is how I came to meet some of my now, best friends. I passed on some nice examples and some not so nice ones, too, but in the fall of 2019 an offer was presented to me that I couldn't refuse. A good friend called me from Treasure Cay, Abaco and said he had hauled a beautifully kept Formosa 51, out of a marina. The boat sank in her slip which resulted in minimal ("minimal") damage. It's a particular boat I had on my short shopping list and after he sent a few pictures, and some basic info, I made the deal.

Follow along in my series as an average midwestern guy with a not-so-average international crew embarks on the journey of a lifetime, acquiring, repairing, and eventually sailing an old yacht, purchased for $1.00.
