in this paint with me video, I’m testing the Himi Gouache set and sharing my thoughts on this viral gouache. I start by swatching every color directly from the palette, and then again with each color watered down. along the way I discuss how gouache is kind of in-between of acrylic and watercolor depending on how much water you add. I test out how it layers, its transparency, and how it behaves during different techniques like wet-on-wet or painting thick layers.

because this is student grade paint, it’s not something I’d use when making finished paintings. however, it’s perfect for experimenting in my sketchbook. I love how the design of the palette makes it so there’s no setup required, you can just start painting! you don’t need to decide which colors to use, squeeze paint out of the tube, or wet the palette, it’s ready to go.

after swatching and testing the colors, I dive into more illustrative paintings. I explore style, try out a fun squish technique that creates a symmetrical mirror image. I also paint a quilt and some ceramic tulips as I discuss how observational drawing doesn’t have to be boring - you can draw anything you want, exaggerate shapes, and play around with stylizations. so if you’re looking for inspiration, to try out a new medium, if you're new to gouache, or you just want to join me in a creative and relaxing painting session, then you’ve come to the right place!
