A. E. van Vogt “Far Centaurus” Astounding Jan. 1944. Another group of groundbreaking concepts from van Vogt, in one shot. This story revolves around a “Sleeper” starship, traveling to [in astronomic distances] nearby Alpha Centauri. The 4 men on board sleep in staggered shifts, with someone waking at 50-year intervals to check on the ship. The trip takes 500 years, in both Earth and ship time. Van Vogt reasons out a lot of possible consequences involved in such an undertaking! Some never fully articulated before, that I can tell. This was an important early Golden Age work, very influential.

A. E. van Vogt April 26th, 1912 to January 26th, 2000. A. E. van Vogt was a very influential Golden Age author, mostly published by John W. Campbell Jr 1939 thru 1947, being published in other magazines and books, by 1947. I cover his “The World of Null A”, The Weapon Shop novels, the Golden Age kickoff short story “Black Destroyer” and a bookshelf tour in other reviews. I felt revisiting van Vogt’s extraordinarily inventive short SF would be interesting, besides being great SF! Many of van Vogt’s connected short stories were later combined into novels, I will not offer many of those, concentrating on his stand-alone short stories.
