Hi, I’m Toshi Maeda… and welcome back to J-Stories, where ideas and technology from Japan help solve global social and environmental problems. Here’s a quick look at this week’s J-Stories!

This week we have two stories about turning waste into useful products.

Each year in Japan, more than six hundred thousand tons of unwanted fish parts are thrown away, including the skin. But now two Japanese companies are turning that skin into attractive and sustainable leather. The leather is just as strong as animal leather, but thankfully… the fishy smell isn't, being completely removed during the manufacturing process.

The companies are already making and selling products made from this unique leather, such as wallets, belts, and business card cases. What’s more, they are keen to share their technology with the world. Both companies are even taking part in a United Nations project to promote fish leather in the South Pacific nation of Samoa.

Rice resin is a form of plastic made from old and broken rice. Like other biomass plastics, it’s an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics, which pollute the oceans and are a cause of global warming.

In Japan, as people eat less rice, rice farming is gradually declining. So, growing and using rice for making plastic could help the environment AND revitalize the agriculture industry. The rice plastic was developed by Tokyo start-up Biomass Resin Holdings and has already been used to make cutlery, children’s toys and bento lunch boxes. Their aim is to produce a plastic that is both made from waste and reduces new waste by biodegrading at the end of its life.

That’s all for this week from J-Stories. Please visit our website at J-Stories. Media for more details on these stories.
