As an introduction to Athelas concert on April 23 2017, conductor Jean Thorel gives a short presentation of himself, and the two pieces Fausto Romitellis "Professor Bad Trip Lesson I-III and Francois Leclére: Entre la fumée et le cristal.

Professor Bad Trip can be seen as an attempt to describe how music is experienced under the influence of various psychedelic drugs and the composition effects confuses your experience - is what we hear really what the musicians are playing - or is it a hallucination?
The composition draws heavily on elements from the more boundary pushing rock music combined with exquisite refinements of contemporary music, and effects and electronics in surround sound completes the experience.
The music should be felt in the audiences body!
Romitelli is trying to escape the 'cultured' music conventions and neat sounds outside 'flesh and blood', and he does this by launching a 'study' of how our perception works under influence of psychedelics such as mescaline.
A source of inspiration for this for this approach is the poet Henri Michaux and his experiments with writing under the influence of mescaline - at home, one can mention a poet Thomas Boberg, who has also experimented with writing distorted realities ahead.
Romitelli himself wrote of the work:
"A distinguishing feature of the work is the hypnotic ritual aspect, the tendency to deformation and the AN: manic repetitions, continuous and forceful acceleration and accumulation of speed and material distortion far above the saturation point, white noise, an increasing drive towards chaos material is presented to the immediately be dissolved, the pace is unstable like the density is so. "
Professor Bad Trip is where the psychedelic rock lives on - as it includes the lines in a review:
"The brilliant cellokadencer sounded as rates by the Bach arranged by Sonic Youth"
