Abott Handerson Thayer is one of my favorite painters, his paintings are just a feast for the eyes and I’m always drawn to them in the museums. Unfortunately, I still have yet to find a book that does him justice, but this one I review is the closest I’ve found yet. While it does focus more on the work Thayer did to understand camouflage during WWI as well as other theories or revelations that Thayer came to understand and believe about animal coloration, it does at least showcase high quality images of an artist who tends to be overlooked by art book publishers. The second book we look at is about Manet and Degas. This book accompanied a recent exhibit on the two artists highlighting their friendship and rivalry through their lives and in the case on Manet even past when his own life ended. This book highlights a range of work from the artists careers, from mastercopies they did while studying to art created towards the end of their careers as well as highlighting how Degas worked to collect Manet’s art after Manet died.
