Throwing a single scientific article at followers, especially when you don’t even know how to interpret it, is just a way to confuse them. Recommendations come from evidence-based data after a review of the totality of the evidence-not a single study.

Stillbirth is a very serious topic that requires accounts provide accurate info. Her post was not only sensational—it was inaccurate. More problematic, though, is she is not a medical professional. Her post was meant to deepen the divide between obstetrical care providers and patients.

Explanation of the calculations:

The study started with 472843 pregnancies. To calculate the stillbirth rate per 1000 pregnancies at each week you need to know the number of live births and still births at 37+0 to 37+6 weeks, 38+0 to 38+6 weeks, and so on. As you go along you subtract the number of live births and stillbirths from the starting number of pregnancies (472843) for each subsequent week.

At week 37+0-37+6 there were 106 stillbirths and 38197 live births. So the rate of stillbirths based on the number of pregnancies going into 37th week of pregnancy (WOP) is 106/472832 x 1000 or .22. For week 38+0-38+6, the number of pregnancies going into that week would be 472843-106-38197=434540. That is repeated for each week of pregnancy according to how many live births and stillbirths there are each week.

The calculation she used, or the misleading calculation, is rate of stillbirths per 1,000 births of the week. So for week 37+0-37+6, it would be 106 stillbirths/38197 live births of that week x 1000=2.77. This is not the correct way to calculate stillbirth rate since you start with a cohort of subjects, 472843, and calculate the rate according to number of ongoing pregnancies taking away the number of live births and still births at the start of each week.
