RNC: Trump coup complete with loyalist as chair and daughter-in-law as co-chair

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has sealed the deal on Donald Trump's influence within the party by voting in his handpicked leadership team. This move solidifies Trump's grip on the national stage as he inches closer to a potential third consecutive presidential nomination.

In a vote held Friday morning in Houston, Michael Whatley, a Republican from North Carolina known for echoing Trump's unfounded allegations of voter fraud, secured the position of the party's national chair. Lara Trump, the former president's daughter-in-law, was elected as co-chair.

While Trump's team assures that the RNC won't be used to cover his increasing personal legal expenses, it's clear that Trump and his allies will wield significant control over the party's political and fundraising apparatus, facing minimal resistance from within.

In his address to RNC members following his election, Whatley pledged that the RNC would spearhead efforts to secure Donald J. Trump's nomination for the presidency, positioning the committee as a driving force behind Trump's bid for the 47th presidency of the United States.

Whatley takes the helm as the new chair, replacing Ronna McDaniel, who lost favor with key figures in the former president's Make America Great Again movement. However, he will be surrounded by individuals closely aligned with Trump.

Lara Trump is anticipated to focus primarily on fundraising and media engagements, as she underscored shortly after her election. During her inaugural address, she proudly displayed a $100,000 check donated to the party that day, though she declined to disclose the donor when questioned by a reporter.

Chris LaCivita will functionally lead the RNC as its chief of staff while retaining his position as one of the top advisers to the Trump campaign.

McDaniel, initially chosen by Trump to lead the committee seven years ago, was ousted as the Maga movement increasingly attributed losses to her leadership in recent years.

Despite receiving a standing ovation upon her departure, the new leadership enthusiastically embraces the transition. Lara Trump, accompanied by her husband, Eric Trump, received a celebrity-like welcome, with members lining up for photos with her.

With Trump's approval, LaCivita vows to implement extensive changes and staffing adjustments across all levels of the RNC to ensure its seamless alignment with the Trump campaign.

Addressing concerns from some RNC members about the committee's financial strain, LaCivita emphasized in an interview on Thursday that the RNC would not be contributing to Trump's legal expenses. Trump currently faces four criminal indictments, totaling 91 counts, and is appealing a civil fraud judgment of $355 million. His associated Save America political action committee has allocated $76 million over the past two years for legal fees.

LaCivita dismissed speculations about the RNC covering Trump's legal costs as attempts to undermine donors, clarifying that Save America, a separate political entity, primarily covers Trump's legal expenses.

The new leadership team is anticipated to fully embrace Trump's emphasis on voter fraud and his unsubstantiated claims regarding the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden. Despite numerous court cases and investigations by Trump's own Justice Department failing to reveal significant voting irregularities, the focus on voter fraud remains a priority.

Whatley, an attorney, has refrained from echoing Trump's assertions regarding Biden's victory. In a 2021 interview, he affirmed that Biden was legitimately elected and won the majority of electoral college votes. However, in another interview shortly after the 2020 election, he mentioned "massive fraud." He has since prioritized "election integrity" within his state party in the following years.
