India is the fifth largest plastic waste generator in the world, with around 43% of plastic products manufactured being used for packaging.

With the recent bans on single-use plastics, the Indian population has started several plastic waste recycling projects, such as the milk bag project, which has successfully collected 750,000 milk bags, or the Akshayakalpa Organic dairy producer initiative, which has recycled more than 1.9 million discarded dairy product cartons.

But what happens to the waste once it has been collected?

To recycle post-consumer waste, such as discarded milk bottles and bags, it must first be sorted, washed, and dried. To then feed it into a recycling machine, where the plastic waste is melted, filtered, any remaining moisture is removed from the material and finally reshaped into pellets so that it can be reused in production lines.
