Fly Fishing for Gila trout in New Mexico!!

When you think of chasing one of America’s rarest trout you probably envision tough hikes through rough terrain and lots of trial and error… but I’ll be honest, that’s not what happened in this video. It was… easy, for once. In fact we found a creek in a beautiful desert canyon that was so loaded with Gila Trout that we could’ve easily passed the 100 fish mark without putting in that much effort. It’s days like this one that give you hope for a species that’s been tetering on the edge of extinction for so long. Welcome back to another video.

I wasn’t lying, I probably could’ve sat there and caught fish for a long time.

In fact I did sit there for a little longer just to enjoy the moment and catch as many gila trout as I wanted. But after a while I almost felt bad for catching so many, and I seriously thought there was a chance I had hooked almost every fish in the hole so we moved on and let Andrew have the next hole.

After Andrew caught a handful of fish it was Micah’s turn and he followed suite, with several nice fish coming to net. At this point we had caught so many fish that I wasn’t too concerned with catching another dozen 8 inchers so I decided to hunt for a bigger one. And when Andrew said he had spotted one in a hole up ahead I made my move.

I’m not going to lie to you guys, I never got another chance at a large gila trout. We ended up running into a bunch of hikers and other fisherman and didn’t end up fishing much the rest of the day. And as pretty as that area was, the amount of people ended up just making us leave early so we could get a head start on our drive to the next location. But overall the Gila Trout is an interesting fish. It’s related to a rainbow trout that once made the migration up the Gila River from the gulf of California, and you can tell. What I mean is they look a lot like a rainbow trout. I’d definitely not put this fish at the top of my prettiest trout list, but it was cool to see the insane environment they live in. From puddles to towering desert canyons, this fish will bring you to some of the gnarliest places on earth. Which for me made it worth every second.
