Footage released by Ed Farmer's family to warn others about the dangers of excessive drinking shows Ed (inset) and a group of fellow students downing vodkas in a Newcastle bar. In another video he is seen collapsing in a train station before being picked up by members of the group and carried through the station.Ed was 'terrified and trying to run away' when he got on the Newcastle Metro (right) after being encouraged to drink about 27 vodka shots in an hour, an inquest heard. The first year economics student died of alcohol poisoning following a notorious decades-old initiation ceremony held by Newcastle University's Agriculture Society. The drink-fuelled ritual - in which students drank vodka from a pig's head and bobbed apples in urine - had been going on for at least 40 years, a coroner heard. Today, the coroner ruled his death was the result of the 'toxic effects' of consuming excessive alcoholand the lack of awareness to the 'inherent risks' of binge drinking. The inquest was told freshers were aware of the initiation's reputation and that Mr Farmer was so nervous he had been 'physically shaking' at the start of the night.
