With the advent of June, the rainy season in Kerala, like every year, is about to begin. But there's one thing that most of us don't know. This rainy season, which we call the monsoon, is not, in fact, an event confined to this small state of ours. This monsoon in Kerala is only a part of the South Asian Monsoon, the largest weather phenomenon on earth. Many countries in the southeastern parts of Asia, including India and China, are experiencing rainfall due to this phenomenon. The South Asian Monsoon is a phenomenon that affects the lives of a good percentage of the world's population. Moreover, this is not an event that has started recently. It is a weather phenomenon that has been going on for centuries.

The South Asian Monsoon is generally classified into two types. The first of these is the southwest monsoon or southwest monsoon. Apart from that, we also have a short rainy season called “Tulavarsham”. It's called the North East Monsoon. It rains mostly late at that time. A lot of people ask me why.

ജൂൺ മാസത്തിന്റെ വരവോടെ എല്ലാ വർഷത്തെയും പോലെ കേരളത്തിൽ മഴക്കാലം ആരംഭിക്കാറായി. പക്ഷെ നമ്മളിൽ പലർക്കും അറിയാത്ത ഒരു കാര്യമുണ്ട്. നമ്മൾ കാലവർഷം എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്ന ഈ മഴക്കാലം, ശരിക്കും, നമ്മുടെ ഈ കൊച്ചു കേരളത്തിൽ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു സംഭവമല്ല. ഭൂമിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കാലാവസ്ഥ പ്രതിഭാസമായ South Asian Monsoonഇന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം മാത്രമാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ ഈ കാലവർഷം. ഇന്ത്യയും ചൈനയും അടക്കം Asiaയുടെ തെക്കു കിഴക്കൻ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഉള്ള ഒരുപാട് രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ഒരു പ്രതിഭാസം മൂലം മഴ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നുണ്ട്. ലോക ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ നല്ലൊരു ശതമാനത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രതിഭാസമാണ് ഈ South Asian Monsoon. മാത്രമല്ല ഇത് ഈയടുത്ത കാലത്തു തുടങ്ങിയ ഒരു സംഭവമൊന്നുമല്ല. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായിട്ട് നടക്കുന്ന ഒരു കാലാവസ്ഥ പ്രതിഭാസമാണ്.
South Asian Monsoonഇനെ പൊതുവെ രണ്ടായിട്ടു തരംതിരിക്കാറുണ്ട്. അതിൽ ഒന്നാമത്തേതാണ് southwest monsoon അഥവാ തെക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ കാലവർഷം. അത് കൂടാതെ നമുക്ക് തുലാവർഷം എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ മഴക്കാലം കൂടെ ഉണ്ടാകാറുണ്ട്. അതിനെ North east monsoon എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കാറ്. ആ സമയത്ത് മിക്കവാറും വൈകുംനേരങ്ങളിൽ ആണ് മഴ പെയ്യുന്നത്. അത് എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണെന്ന് പലരും എന്നോട് ചോദിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
