The National Sports Governance Act has partially come into effect from January 1, 2026, marking one of the most significant reforms in India’s sports administration. Described as the biggest sporting reform in the country, the Act aims to bring transparency, accountability, and athlete representation into sports governance.
Under the notified provisions, the institutional framework for key national sports bodies will now be established. This includes the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations, and Regional Sports Federations. The implementation also sets the process in motion for the creation of two powerful institutions the National Sports Board and the National Sports Tribunal.
The National Sports Board will have the authority to grant affiliation to sports federations, monitor their financial functioning, and penalise misconduct. Affiliation with the Board will be mandatory for federations seeking government funding. The Act also mandates smaller executive committees with compulsory representation of sportspersons of merit, ensuring greater athlete participation in decision making.
A National Sports Election Panel will be formed to oversee fair elections in sports bodies, while the National Sports Tribunal will handle disputes related to sports administration.
