■The 13th Prime Minister of India, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on December 26,2024.

■Born on September 26,1932,in Gah village,West Punjab (now in Pakistan).

■He joined the Government of India as an Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce in 1971.

■Became the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972.

■Advisor to the Prime Minister on economic affairs during the tenure of Chandra Shekar.

■Dr Singh also worked as a Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.

■15th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982-85).

■Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

■Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva, Switzerland from 1987 -1990.

■He worked As Finance Minister under former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, he was the architect of economic reforms in 1991 that changed the the course of India’s economic trajectory.

■Before being appointed as the Union Finance Minister in 1991 he held the post of the Chairman of the UGC.

■Dr. Manmohan Singh was also the first and only Sikh to hold the office and the only prime minister of India to never win a direct popular election.

■PM for two terms in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government from 2004 to 2014.

■He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1991-2024 and was its member for five consecutive terms.

■Authored the book India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1964), a critical analysis of India’s
inward-oriented trade policies.

■He got Padma Vibhushan in 1987.

■Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development in 2017.

■He was Alma mater of Panjab University (BA, MA),St John's College, Cambridge (BA),Nuffield College, Oxford (DPhil).
