One of the last places where wild chimpanzees live is in western Tanzania, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Visiting the Mahale Mountains National Park and experiencing chimpanzees in this Jurassic landscape of deep rainforests full of life that reach the shores of the lake is truly magical. The park is one of the few in Africa that must be explored on foot. There are no roads or other infrastructure within its boundaries and the only way in and out of it is by boat on the lake. Nor are there any roads for 60 kilometres around, lonely and lost away from civilization, when you are here you have the feeling of belonging to another world.
Silky white coves border the blue waters of Lake Tanganyika, eclipsed by a chain of wild peaks covered with lush jungle rising to over 2400m: the mysterious Mahale Mountains. It is hard to imagine anything more idyllic than the combination of blue and transparent waters, white sandy beaches at the foot of jungle mountains and the possibility of observing a fascinating and enigmatic life in a location so remote that it is possible to enjoy it alone.
