The Tragic Life and Death of Crown Prince Sado 사도세자 [History of Korea]

Yi Seon 이선 (1735-1762), who later became known as Crown Prince Sado 사도세자, was the second son of King Yeongjo of Joseon 조선 영조 (1694-1776). He is most known for his descent into madness and the way he was eventually put to death by his own father.

Of significant importance in recounting Yi Seon's life, is his wife's memoir 한중록, Lady Hyegyeong 혜경궁 풍산 홍씨 (1735-1816), that she wrote in 1805. She was the mother of Yi San 이산 better known as King Jeongjo 조선 정조 (1752-1800).

As young as 10 years old, Sado suffered from an illness which made him lose consciousness at random times. He was also prone to severe bouts of anxiety whenever the king, his father, was around.

Sado became regent at a young age and his father was often dissatisfied with him. Sado also had to deal with constant political infighting at court.

This didn’t help his mental health. He was already terrified of thunder and unable to speak to his father, the king, often chastised him. Sado took out his anger on eunuchs, court ladies, concubines and even his wife. Sado also had a clothing phobia…

Sado died by being confined in a rice chest, duiju 뒤주… a most cruel death. His son, King Jeongjo, tried to rehabilitate his father’s name. He moved his father’s tomb and built Hwaseong fortress near it. He also added the posthumous name Crown Prince Jangheon 장헌세자 莊獻 世 to his father.

Sado’s life was violent and tragic and offers a glimpse into mental health issues centuries ago.
